Easy and Inexpensive DIY Furniture Dollies

Hey everyone! I’m Brenda from Phoenix Furniture Studio, and today, this blog post will guide you through the process of creating mobile furniture dollies for your workshop on a budget. I will share my method for creating functional furniture dollies from inexpensive materials.

Materials Needed

Piece of hardwood (plywood)

Castor wheels (four per dolly)

Mini circular saw

Sander

Sandpaper (120 grit)

Clamp

Electric drill and screwdriver

You can find links to all the products I recommend RIGHT HERE.

Cut the Hardwood

My plywood board measured 122 cm.

To create four evenly-sized dollies, I divided the length by four (122 cm / 4 = 30.5 cm).

I opted to make one dolly slightly larger by rounding up the measurements to 30 cm for the remaining three dollies.

Mark the cutting lines on the plywood according to your desired measurements.

Clamp the plywood to your work surface for stability and safety.

Use a mini circular saw to cut the plywood along the marked lines.

Sand the Boards

Sand down any rough edges or corners using 120-grit sandpaper.

This will prevent injuries (if the board runs into your leg) and minimise damage to other furniture in the workshop.

A person sands a piece of wood on a workbench using an electric sander. The workbench is covered with a purple cloth, and other woodworking tools are visible in the background. The person wears a black shirt and a smartwatch.
Attach the Castors

Mark the locations for the castors on the bottom of each dolly.

Drill pilot holes at the marked locations.

Screw the castors into the pilot holes.

A person is using a power drill on three large wooden panels held together with clamps. Several caster wheels are attached to the panels' edges, and wood shavings are scattered on the surface. The person is wearing dark clothing and sneakers.
Test the Dollies

Place a piece of furniture on each dolly and test to see if it moves smoothly.

If the furniture does not move smoothly, adjust the castors as needed.

I found that the bigger the wheel, the smoother the dolly moves. I would recommend no smaller than a 50mm wheel.

A white vintage sideboard with ornate gold handles and intricate carvings sits in a sunlit room with wooden flooring. Surrounding plants, including a potted fern and pampas grass, add a touch of greenery.

These are cheap, quick, and easy-to-make wheeled dollies that will help you move your furniture around the workshop. They may not be glamorous, but they are functional and will get the job done.
