Description

A stunning example of late Victorian bookbinding, this antique Schumann Album is as much a piece of art as it is a collection of sheet music. Published in London by the renowned Augener & Co., this edition of 56 piano pieces by Robert Schumann was revised and annotated by the celebrated German composer, Theodore Kullak.

The front cover is a masterpiece of 19th-century design, featuring intricate black and gilt patterns on a rich red cloth board. Adding to its unique story, the back cover bears a gilt emblem from the “North Place Ladies School, Abergavenny,” indicating this book was once awarded as a prestigious school prize. Inside, the pages contain classic works including “Album for the Young” and “Scenes of Childhood.”

Features:

  • Title: Album: 56 Pièces pour le Piano by Robert Schumann
  • Publisher: Augener & Co., London
  • Editor: Theodore Kullak
  • Binding: Highly decorative cloth hardback with gilt and black detailing.
  • Provenance: Features a fascinating school prize emblem from the North Place Ladies School, Abergavenny.
  • Language: French (title page) and English (contents, advice).

Measurements (Approximate):

  • Height: 30.5cm (12 inches)
  • Width: 24cm (9.4 inches)

Condition: Good antique condition for its decorative purpose, but with significant structural wear consistent with its age. The decorative front board is wonderfully vibrant, and the gilt work remains bright. The interior pages are remarkably clean and crisp for their age, with minimal foxing. However, please be aware that the binding is loose and the main block of pages has separated from the spine/cover. The exterior shows wear, including bumped and frayed corners and rubbing along the edges. It is being sold primarily as a decorative object or for study/ephemera. Styling Ideas:

  • A perfect decorative object for a classic library, bookshelf, or tiered atop a grand piano.
  • An ideal prop for period film, theatre, or photography, adding a touch of authentic historical character.
  • A thoughtful and unique gift for a pianist, music historian, or a collector of beautiful Victorian books.
